2004 Speech Day Award Recipients and Citations

VINCENT DE PAul AWARD FOR COMMUNITY – ALEX KAVAGNAH Throughout his years at St. Paul’s, the recipient has been an integral part of the Edwin and Jamieson Streets Christmas Light Display in Fairlight for the Starlight Foundation and Cancer Council. In 2001 he supported the Entwistle family and has since worked to raise funds for the Cancer council. He takes responsibility for the planning and preparation of the Jamieson Street display and liaises with the Cancer Council to maintain the legacy of Stewart Entwistle. His example in this, and also as a role model in the exercise of his prefect duties make Alex Kavanagh a worthy recipient of the Community Service Award. |
![]() | CALTEX BEST ALL ROUNDER AWARD – KALAN WOODMAN This award, recognises participation and excellence in academic, sporting and services activities. This year it is awarded to a Year 12 student for the significant contribution made to college life. A serious student who has always made every effort to succeed he has produced efforts of high quality. As a prefect he has also been reliable and responsible. He has been involved in representative sport, especially Rugby and Athletics. A talent for organisation as well as commitment have ensured this recipient has been an enthusiastic worker for many school activities. Consistently focused and conscious of his role as mentor, he is a fine example of the best attributes of a St. Paul’s student. The award is presented to the college Vice-Captain, Kalan Woodman. |
![]() | REUBEN F SCARF AWARD – TOM MEATES Reuben F Scarf believed that with hard work, common sense and a purpose, all goals were achievable. He thought that young people who are persistent and dedicated are the ones who ultimately reach their goals. A little help and recognition can be the magic that builds the confidence to start them on the road to success. This award is not necessarily for the brightest star or the highest achiever. Its purpose is to recognise and honour consistent effort and the desire to improve. |
![]() | THE COLLEGE RED AND BLACK – TRISTAN STANLEY The ‘Red and Black’ is a special sports tie, awarded to a senior student (yr 11 or 12) who has made an outstanding contribution to sport. This student excels at a major college sport and has achieved in a number of other sports, played at the school. This student has an exceptional school record and his contribution is characterised by dedication and an excellent attitude. The ‘Red and Black’ is one of the highest sporting honours, second only to “Sportsman of the Year”. This year’s winner is a year 11 student. He is an outstanding Rugby Union player – competing for NSW, NSW Combined Catholic Colleges and Sydney. In addition he represents the College in Touch football, Rugby League, Athletics, Cross Country, Surf Lifesaving and Biathlon. |
![]() | MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR – DREW DAWSON This student emerged as a star guitarist during Year 9 Elective Music. He has performed in all the College Assemblies since this time as well as being a part of the College Stage, Jazz and Church Bands and being our main accompanist for our singers at all special college events such as Carols evenings. He has his own rock band ‘Mispent Youth’ which came 2nd in the Northern Composure Band Competition and were finalists in the Youth Rock and Hard Rock competitions. |
![]() | THE PHIL HODSON MEMORIAL TROPHY – SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR - ANDREW MAXWELL. “Sportsman of the year” is awarded to a year 11 or 12 student of outstanding sporting ability. This student has contributed to the development of sport throughout his high school years at St Paul’s College. He competes for the college at a high level in a number of sports. His school sporting commitments take precedent over external sport unless he is seconded to a higher, representative level in his primary sport. The winner of this trophy sets a superb example for younger students. This is due to his remarkable ability, exceptional effort, outstanding sportsmanship and immense pride in his school. This year’s winner is a year 12 student. He has excelled at Rugby Union and Rugby League. He was a member of the Open NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Union team and played in the SG Ball side for the Manly Sea Eagles. He was also awarded “Player of the Tournament” at the Arrive Alive Rugby League Gala Day. In addition, he was selected in the Open, Broken Bay Touch Team and has represented St Paul’s at Athletics, Cross Country and basketball. He is a sporting identity at the school and is very popular with his teachers and peers – he has developed into fine young man with a bright future. |
![]() | AWARD FOR SERVICES TO THE COLLEGE – MRS SUE BulLOCK This award goes to a parent who has 2 sons at the College and has been an active member of the P & F Association for the past 6 years. More of an Indian than a chief, she has been she has been involved in just about every P & F event over the last 6 years ; discos, trivia nights, dinner dances, carols by candlelight just to name a few! We have all benefited from her input. She has also served as Secretary to the P & F and is a great friend to many of our parents. Thank you. |
![]() | DUX OF THE COLLEGE – TIM COTTON The Dux of St. Paul’s is a talented young man who has shown fine academic leadership to the Year 12s throughout the year. He is first in numerous subjects. He is the Dux due to the high standards of academic rigour and mental discipline that characterise all his efforts. He is well respected by staff and students alike and his example to others has been of the highest order. |
