Skiers claim Gold and Bronze in National Championships

Congratulations go to our division 1 Moguls ski team. The team comprised of year 11’s Sam Hall (left) and Chris Martin (right) and year 10’s James Walker (middle), pictured right. These boys have recently won a Gold and Bronze in the National Schools Skiing competition held in Perisher. This caps off a great season for the school ski team claiming medals at all, Sydney Zone, State and National Championships.

Sam Hall won the individual moguls in fine style earning 27.82 points out of a possible 30. Sam was 2.32 ahead of second place. With the backing of Walker and Martin the boys won Bronze in the team’s event narrowly missing Gold and Silver.

Many of the private schools (in which we beat in our chosen events) turned up with professional coaches, super spandex racing suits, ski and board tuners and intense training programs prior to the event. All these were not enough to beat our St. Paul’s team which made many fellow competitors and spectators sit back and take note of a small but competitive team.

More great news came Sam Hall’s way with the National Senior coach informing Sam that he has been selected in the National Senior Team to compete at the European Cups in January of 2007, keeping in mind that Australia has the current Olympic Gold Medallist on this very team.

Sam is ranked 1 in Australia as Junior National freestyle Skiier.

He is also ranked 3rd  Australian in the International Continental Cup (Senior Mens). This involves Mogul Skiing. Sam has gained a place in the Senior National Team for the European Cups this coming January.

Comments these students made about their participation in this event include:

James Walker: “Skiing the moguls was really challenging and exhausting, but it paid off. I was stoked to come third with my St. Paul’s team”.

Sam Hall: “Being in a team is excellent because when you do well you can share the excitement”. My individual achievement has given me more drive to keep winning”.

Chris Martin: “It was a fantastic day and I’m looking forward to competing again next year. The event had a very high standard”.
